2022 09 news melbourne cupFor the first time, the road to Flemington goes directly through Portarlington.

The 2022 Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour, now in its 20th year, will make its way to the Bellarine Peninsula on Tuesday, 4 October for its only stop in western Victoria en route to the race that stops a nation.

To celebrate the cup’s first ever visit to the town, the Portarlington Business Development Association will host a celebratory fundraising dinner at the Portarlington Golf Club that evening.

The night will feature two guest speakers, both luminaries in the racing industry.
Elite trainer Danny O’Brien, who saddled up Vow and Declare to win the 2019 Melbourne Cup, and legendary race caller Greg Miles – with 36 Cup calls to his name – will be on hand to chat through all aspects of the famous race, that will be held this year on Tuesday, 1 November.

Tickets for the evening cost $75, including a two-course meal and your chance to see the cup first hand.

As part of the ticket price, $30 will be donated to the PBDA Christmas Appeal to buy gifts for kids who otherwise would go without at holiday time.
The cup’s tour will already have taken in New Zealand, Singapore and all Australian states before it gets to Portarlington, just four weeks before the big race.

Since the tour’s inception in 2003, the famous three-handled Cup has travelled more than 760,000km around the world, visiting more than 560 destinations, engaging with tens of thousands of people and raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for local fundraising initiatives.

As part of that process this year, Portarlington will be one of 24 regional venues to be allocated a barrier as part of a $50,000 national sweep.

That barrier will be allocated to a horse when the final barrier draw is made on the weekend before the cup is run. Should that horse duly win on the first Tuesday in November, a cash prize of $50,000 will be put towards a charity for a community initiative within Portarlington.
